My Embedded System (Mis)Adventures

So I seem to have developed a craze for working with embedded systems. Mostly, I have been surfing the web looking at cool DIY projects that hobbyists have been working on. I decided to document some cool projects that I found and possibly projects that I intend to or have already made.

Since I am a Computer Scientist and not an Engineer I have no real experience with working with electronics. I did take a couple of circuit design courses back in my undergraduate days but the little experience I got has long been forgotten. Therefore, I consider myself a noob.

What brought upon this craze you might ask? I saw a video on YouTube about this Iphone controlled R/C car. Okay so its not a true IPhone application (the control is through a webpage) but its still incredibly amazing. My nerdy-senses were immediately heightened.

A few more clicks and I stumbled upon NerdKits. What is NerdKits you ask. Its an electronics kit comprising of an assortment of useful components that introduces and teaches budding engineers basic electronics and circuit design and allows them to get their hands dirty. Why this kit and not any other. Well honestly I cannot answer this since I have never bought ANY kit. The reviews seemed encouraging, the tutorials used surprisingly simple lingo and covered a lot of basics.

Anyways to keep things short I have ordered a kit and once I have it I plan to build some initial toy projects and then get on with the really cool stuff.

Update: the kit has been delivered (got shipped within 3 hours of ordering).

Things I am really looking forward to making:

  1. The IPhone controlled R/C car (after all that caused this craze)

  2. An LED 3D-cube (3x3x3 to start with)

  3. An RGB LED 3D-cube (a cool video can be seen here)
